Since the beginning of our engagement, well our relationship really, Jon and I have been so blessed with discipleship from many married couples both in Richmond and in Fayetteville.
To me, this is probably one of the most valuable things that has and will equip us in our life together.
Through that we have gotten a long suggested reading list.
I know no book could possibly teach us all there is to know about marriage (except the Bible), but we are only on our second book, and as a result, have had so many good (sometimes hard) conversations.
I highly recommend Sacred Marriage. I feel it brought Jon and I so much closer to talk about deep issues, and have God speak His truth to each of our hearts.
The main point of this read was the focus on what marriage really exists for.
The world (and us in our own selfishness) would have us believe that marriage exists solely for our own happiness. This is SUPER SUPER wrong.
The book really strives to teach and encourage us in that marriage is made for something SO much greater; that instead of existing to make us happy, it exists to make us holy.
I don't want to give too much away, but y'all should check it out. :)
Happy Tuesday!
Love,
Claire

I've heard wonderful things about this book! I am definitely going to have to read it with the new husband :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, girl! Please let me know what you think!
DeleteI need to check it out! When we got married, I know a few people said I would only learn through being married, not reading...but I disagree! You can learn and prepare for so much through reading the right books! I love hearing different people's perspective and different ways they handle situations. I wasn't taught to deal with different situations in the correct way growing up, so the past 9 months have been a learning experience and I like how I am now so much more! Keep reading! Don't ever stop! If it lines up with God's word, I say go for it!
ReplyDeleteAhh yes! It helps us SO much! I really do feel God can use those things to speak to you.
DeleteReading in general is an awesome way to connect us through a long distance relationship as well. :)
We read Sacred Marriage as well and really cherished it! I love how the book is so honest and digs deep into issues that couples face! 'This Momentary Marriage' is another one that I really liked, I haven't finished it yet, but the first half of it has been great!
ReplyDeleteYay! Yes, we loved it. :) I definitely want to check out 'This Momentary Marriage' Thanks for sharing. We hadn't been recommended that one yet. We are reading 'Love & Respect' right now. :)
